32 They had only just left when suddenly a man was brought to him, a dumb demoniac.

33 And when the devil was driven out, the dumb man spoke and the people were amazed and said, 'Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.'

34 But the Pharisees said, 'It is through the prince of devils that he drives out devils.'

35 Jesus made a tour through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing all kinds of disease and all kinds of illness.

36 And when he saw the crowds he felt sorry for them because they were harassed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd.

Moving Hearts.

Seeing tears fall from the eyes of another causes tears to well up in our own. We watch the evening news and see victims of war or natural disaster, or refugees and immigrants seeking community, and wipe tears from our own eyes. Empathy is at work here, moving hearts to show compassion. Compassion is the virtue that moves us toward solidarity with those who suffer, rather than toward popularity and privilege through power.

Today’s Gospel teaches us that we are closer to living under God’s reign, not when we prove ourselves to be better, but when we reach out because we are the same. Read “his heart was moved with pity” as compassion, not as condescension. No one should have to be alone in their grief and pain. Compassion restores the suffering to their place in a caring community. The challenge of today’s Gospel is not to explain the why of suffering, but to be the kind of people who are moved to absorb the terror of pain and suffering that threatens to isolate those in need and destroy their dignity.

In a world where competition is the dominant mode of relating with others, Jesus models a different way: compassion. He calls us to reach beyond our one-to-one connections and into the community—to immigrants, the homeless, those marginalized by racism and sexism. Compassion lets them be present to us by letting their circumstances bring us to tears and moving our hearts to include them.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
