16 Look, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; so be cunning as snakes and yet innocent as doves.

17 'Be prepared for people to hand you over to sanhedrins and scourge you in their synagogues.

18 You will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, as evidence to them and to the gentiles.

19 But when you are handed over, do not worry about how to speak or what to say; what you are to say will be given to you when the time comes,

20 because it is not you who will be speaking; the Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you.

21 'Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will come forward against their parents and have them put to death.

22 You will be universally hated on account of my name; but anyone who stands firm to the end will be saved.

23 If they persecute you in one town, take refuge in the next; and if they persecute you in that, take refuge in another. In truth I tell you, you will not have gone the round of the towns of Israel before the Son of man comes.

Called to Courage.

In spite of the daily barrage of bad news, stories of courageous acts are usually waiting to be discovered behind the headlines. A first responder racing into a burning building, a bystander leaping forth to save a life, or an organ donor risking it all for a stranger. I always look for these reports because they draw me away from despair about current events. Typically, I do not imagine myself as ever being brave enough to do such things.

Yet today’s Gospel reminds us that we are all called to courage. The imagined safety and security of our lives is threatened when Jesus says we are being sent “like sheep in the midst of wolves.” Acts of courage are not options; they are a command. We might worry that we lack the wisdom or the words for living in wolf territory, but again, Jesus assures us that we will be given what we need to proceed.

This is the kind of surrender that I would prefer to read about, not have to act on. Brother will hand over brother? Children rising up against parents? People being put to death? No thank you! Then I recall those news stories of selfless heroism. They resonate with the Gospel, the gore and the glory. The required courage is available to all, if we only believe in and follow Jesus. Doing so may be the most profound act of courage of all.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
