34 'Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth: it is not peace I have come to bring, but a sword.

35 For I have come to set son against father, daughter against mother, daughter-in-law against mother-in-law;

36 a person's enemies will be the members of his own household.

37 'No one who prefers father or mother to me is worthy of me. No one who prefers son or daughter to me is worthy of me.

38 Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me.

39 Anyone who finds his life will lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.

40 'Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me; and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.

41 'Anyone who welcomes a prophet because he is a prophet will have a prophet's reward; and anyone who welcomes an upright person because he is upright will have the reward of an upright person.

Love’s Reward.

I’m not good because of any revelations I’ve had. No. I’m good only if I love God better. Also, however much you love God more than I do, you’re closer to God than I am.

I don’t say this to the wise. You already know it. I say it to those of you who admire my revelations. Be comforted and strengthened, because we’re all one in love. God certainly didn’t reveal to me that He loves me better than the humblest soul who’s in a state of grace. I’m sure there are many who’ve never had revelations or visions—only the usual teaching of the Holy Church—who love God better than I do.

If I pay special attention to myself, I’m nothing, but in general I am—I hope—unified with my fellow Christians in love. This union holds salvation because God is everything that is good, God made everything that is made, and God loves everything that He made. The person who loves everything and everyone God made, loves God because God is in every person. God is in all things.

The person who loves everything loves as God loves.

Julian of Norwich (1342–1416) was an English mystic who experienced a series of intense visions that were later recorded in A Revelation of Love and are commonly referred to as Showings.

Closing Prayer

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
