26 Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do.

27 Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

God’s Unsettling Invitation.

God does God’s work, to be sure; but the story of the Bible is the story of enlisting and recruiting human agents to do the things that God has promised. . . .

Now I assume that you are like Moses and like me—ordinary life, ordinary work, ordinary sheep to tend. Nonetheless, it does happen that the power of God explodes in our midst, and we get pushed out beyond our conventional horizon. It is, of course, possible to go on as though God’s intrusion has not happened. Most of us, moreover, are timid and not inclined to crawl out very far on a limb. But it does happen, here and there, to people like us. And where it happens, the story moves to its next scene, for the story of this people is the story of folk who have agreed to do God’s own work of promise and liberation.

I imagine, moreover, that the reason we need to think about this story of the bush and its unsettling invitation is that our society is in deep crisis. It is clear that most of our old patterns of life together are not working. This is indeed a time when the church may gather its faith together in order to think and pray and act differently. We are people who believe that God’s old promises for wellbeing and justice still persist in the world. We are people who believe that God’s resolve for liberation in the world and of the world is a resolve of urgency that still pertains to the abused. And we are the ones who know that the promissory, liberating work of God devolves upon folk who do God’s work in the world.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
