16 but warned them not to make him known.

17 This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:

18 Look! My servant whom I have chosen, my beloved, in whom my soul delights, I will send my Spirit upon him, and he will present judgement to the nations;

19 he will not brawl or cry out, his voice is not heard in the streets,

20 he will not break the crushed reed, or snuff the faltering wick,

21 until he has made judgement victorious; in him the nations will put their hope.

Do This in Memory.

The Pharisees went out and took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. A chilling opening to today’s Gospel, a murder plot. We witness the reduction of a life to a problem and the suggestion that the solution to the problem is the taking of that life. The Pharisees clearly wanted Jesus to go away. Because of his teaching, example, and actions, they decided Jesus was the source of too much trouble for them. His life was equated with trouble. Not worth the trouble, not worth the life. They planned his death.

Such a calculated, cold rationale should chill us to the bone. And yet, is the thought process here really that foreign to us? If we are honest, we recognize ourselves in the midst of those who went out and took counsel. Each time we reduce a person to a problem, we stand in that same circle, whether that person is in the womb, on death row, at the border. Or someone who simply challenges the way we think, believe, or vote. Ugh, can’t they just go away? And with that thought we are on the same path that led the Pharisees to consider the taking of a life.

It is easy to cherish the dignity of a person we love. It is much harder to recognize and honor the dignity of a person who is troublesome, inconvenient, challenging, or threatening in some way. In Jesus’ name, and in Jesus’ memory, it is precisely this that we are called to do: cherish, honor, and love without distinction.

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.
