1 It was very early on the first day of the week and still dark, when Mary of Magdala came to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved away from the tomb

2 and came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. 'They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,' she said, 'and we don't know where they have put him.'

11 But Mary was standing outside near the tomb, weeping. Then, as she wept, she stooped to look inside,

12 and saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head, the other at the feet.

13 They said, 'Woman, why are you weeping?' 'They have taken my Lord away,' she replied, 'and I don't know where they have put him.'

14 As she said this she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not realise that it was Jesus.

15 Jesus said to her, 'Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?' Supposing him to be the gardener, she said, 'Sir, if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and remove him.'

16 Jesus said, 'Mary!' She turned round then and said to him in Hebrew, 'Rabbuni!' -- which means Master.

17 Jesus said to her, 'Do not cling to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to the brothers, and tell them: I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'

18 So Mary of Magdala told the disciples, 'I have seen the Lord,' and that he had said these things to her.

Breaking Open The Word

We can recall Mary at the tomb and remember that grief is often a sign of great love. How blessed are we to have loved and been loved.

A Visible Testament.

Last fall I attended the funeral Mass for a beloved mentor and spiritual director from my alma mater. With seven Jesuit priests concelebrating the liturgy, the sanctuary was unusually full. What struck me about the congregation, though, was the overwhelming number of women who attended this weekday funeral. Arriving alone or in small groups, women found one another in the pews as friends, family, and former colleagues. We wept together, and our collective grief was a visible testament to who our beloved deceased was to each of us.

I imagine Mary Magdalene grieving similarly as she stood outside the empty tomb. Before the risen Christ appeared to her, and before he sent her forth as the first apostle, Mary’s actions reveal to us something of who Jesus is. She went to the tomb, seeking the one she loved. She stayed. And she wept. The twice-asked question, “Woman, why are you weeping?” does not seem hard to answer. Mary Magdalene wept for the loss of a friend who loved her like no other. Her seeking, staying, and weeping are testaments to her loving commitment to her Lord and the transformative impact of Christ’s love in her life, freeing her from affliction and welcoming her into discipleship.

Loss and grief will accompany all of us in this life. But before we “stop holding on” to those we’ve lost, we can recall Mary at the tomb and remember that grief is often a sign of great love. How blessed are we to have loved and been loved.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
