Love for the Larger Good.

I give up my will to God. I offer myself to be a bearer of God’s greater desire in the space made available by the surrender of my needs. My heart is no longer clogged and cramped by envy, craving, and self-seeking. Evil is overcome with good. Each time we voluntarily give up our will for our personal desires out of faith in and love for the larger good, mercy and redeeming life stream into the earth. . . .

I do not know if the Church or any community can teach us how to do such a thing. For I suspect the transformation of the will occurs in the solitary encounter with God in the garden of suffering. It is by its nature a personal decision forged in the agony of individual life circumstances. Others may stand by, watch or sleep, judge or encourage, or even serve as examples. But the decision is made alone in the freedom of an individual conscience.

Such sacrifice is, in the literal sense of the word, holy work, a sacred deed. It begins with gratitude for one’s privilege and thanksgiving for the blessings in one’s life. It requires sensitivity to injustice, evil, and suffering, and a deep, abiding love for God and neighbor. The struggle is between your will for the thing your heart desires, your beloved (what it is you think will give you life and joy), and your desire for the healing and wholeness of another.

Through God’s grace your eyes are opened to behold God’s beloved as your beloved. What I want and need and have to have, and what God wants and needs and has to have, become the same.

Closing Prayer

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
