1 Now it happened that he was in a certain place praying, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said, 'Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.'

2 He said to them, 'When you pray, this is what to say: Father, may your name be held holy, your kingdom come;

3 give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins,

4 for we ourselves forgive each one who is in debt to us. And do not put us to the test.'

5 He also said to them, 'Suppose one of you has a friend and goes to him in the middle of the night to say, "My friend, lend me three loaves,

6 because a friend of mine on his travels has just arrived at my house and I have nothing to offer him;"

7 and the man answers from inside the house, "Do not bother me. The door is bolted now, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up to give it to you."

8 I tell you, if the man does not get up and give it to him for friendship's sake, persistence will make him get up and give his friend all he wants.

9 'So I say to you: Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.

10 For everyone who asks receives; everyone who searches finds; everyone who knocks will have the door opened.

11 What father among you, if his son asked for a fish, would hand him a snake?

12 Or if he asked for an egg, hand him a scorpion?

13 If you then, evil as you are, know how to give your children what is good, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!'

In Search of the Good Ones.

Do you know ten good people? I mean ten exemplary souls you’d bet the future on. Try as I might, it’s hard to make that list from among the folks who comprise my friends and associates. Don’t get me wrong: I value the people in my life. Their imperfections take away nothing from my affection and regard for them. (I trust they would say the same of me.) Still, our mutual flaws disqualify all of us from the list of innocents Abraham needs as a bargaining chip against God’s planned destruction of two unworthy cities.

Abraham and God engage in a conversation about justice, which devolves into a curious contest of numbers and proportions. It raises a question: How much goodness does it take to balance the world’s badness? Abraham’s position is rather startling. He doesn’t ask God to spare the innocent from the slaughter. He dares to ask God to spare them all, the guilty for the sake of the innocent. God agrees to spare the entire populace if Abraham can produce his ten. He can’t.

Later in biblical history, Jeremiah is charged with finding a single person of integrity. Alas, he too fails.

Rabbinic literature suggests each generation endures for the sake of thirty-six righteous people. We imagine them wandering around, these Mother Teresas and Elie Wiesels, keeping reality from flying apart with their decency and compassion. Do they know who they are, how everything depends on their choices? Do any of us imagine how significant our every decision is?

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
