47 'Again, the kingdom of Heaven is like a dragnet that is cast in the sea and brings in a haul of all kinds of fish.

48 When it is full, the fishermen bring it ashore; then, sitting down, they collect the good ones in baskets and throw away those that are no use.

49 This is how it will be at the end of time: the angels will appear and separate the wicked from the upright,

50 to throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.

51 'Have you understood all these?' They said, 'Yes.'

52 And he said to them, 'Well then, every scribe who becomes a disciple of the kingdom of Heaven is like a householder who brings out from his storeroom new things as well as old.'

Room to Root Around.

On this feast day of St. Alphonsus Liguori, it seems providential that we hear Jesus instructing his disciples to be lively and supple of mind and imagination within the framework of the reign of God. For this reason, parables are an ideal language for expressing the saving action of God in the world and the multiple possible responses humans make to this invitation. Parables are metaphors, requiring an affirmation and a negation held in tension. (The reign of God is like . . . No, it’s not!) This linguistic tension gives us room to root around, to ponder, to think we understand, and then to have to think again.

In this simple story of using a dragnet to haul in a catch of fish and making it analogous to the reign of God, all kinds of questions emerge. What is being thrown away? Inedible sea creatures? Fish too small to eat? Fish without fins and scales (see Lev 11:10-12)? What do these castaways symbolize? Certain people who don’t belong in the Church?

Jesus urges the practice of discretion and prudence when facing these questions, and he embodies these virtues. The disciples are to know the tradition and to have a sense of its power and guidance. At the same time, they are to bring the real questions and insights of the present time face-to-face with the tradition. The reign of God is more about mercy than about judgment. This can only be true because in Jesus Christ judgment is always merciful.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
