Luke 9: 28 - 36.

28 Now about eight days after this had been said, he took with him Peter, John and James and went up the mountain to pray.

29 And it happened that, as he was praying, the aspect of his face was changed and his clothing became sparkling white.

30 And suddenly there were two men talking to him; they were Moses and Elijah

31 appearing in glory, and they were speaking of his passing which he was to accomplish in Jerusalem.

32 Peter and his companions were heavy with sleep, but they woke up and saw his glory and the two men standing with him.

33 As these were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, 'Master, it is wonderful for us to be here; so let us make three shelters, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.' He did not know what he was saying.

34 As he was saying this, a cloud came and covered them with shadow; and when they went into the cloud the disciples were afraid.

35 And a voice came from the cloud saying, 'This is my Son, the Chosen One. Listen to him.'

36 And after the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. The disciples kept silence and, at that time, told no one what they had seen.

Life from Light.

It is hard to hear the Transfiguration reading from Daniel without considering the “surging stream of fire” from the atomic bomb that dropped on Hiroshima seventy-four years ago today. The B-29 that released the bomb must have seemed to those on the ground like a “throne,” a throne from which a conqueror shot “flames of fire.” And it is hard to hear Luke’s story of Jesus’ clothing turning “dazzling white” on the mountain of the Transfiguration without remembering those Hiroshima survivors who spoke of a dazzling white light, a flash bringing brief illumination and, then, lasting night. A “surging stream of fire” is what we men and women constructed and used against other men and women, other sons and daughters of God.

We would do well to consider today the ways in which we continue to use light to bring darkness and dominion to bring death. We would do well also to consider the counsel from Second Peter, that “the prophetic message” given to us of Christ’s majestic glory is not a weapon, but “a lamp shining in a dark place.” It is not ours to own or use against others. The message belongs to anyone longing for the light of Christ, and its radiance falls on all who seek. It brings life, not death. We are called to be attentive to this message, this lamp, as one is attentive to a flashlight leading the way in the mountains on a moonless night. We must be attentive to the lamp and follow it “until day dawns and the morning star rises in [all our] hearts.”
