24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me.

25 Anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.

26 What, then, will anyone gain by winning the whole world and forfeiting his life? Or what can anyone offer in exchange for his life?

27 'For the Son of man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will reward each one according to his behaviour.

For Just That Purpose.

I used to tell my graduate ministry students, “There is only one God, and it is not you or me!” Although we would laugh about this, we also knew how easy it can be for ministers of the Gospel to think that saving this world or saving other people somehow depends entirely on us.

How easily we forget the wonderful works of God throughout our Judeo-Christian history and in our personal history as well. How often we look back and see how God brings us to this particular place and time without our help: “All this you were allowed to see so that you would know that the Lord is God and there is no other.”

It is good to remember these marvels of our God, especially at those times in which we are experiencing the cross of suffering. We remember God’s wondrous deeds in the past so as to endure the cross of the present, giving us hope that God will walk with us in the future. In fact, the Eucharist is a gathering for just that purpose: we remember in Word and Eucharist what God has accomplished through Jesus. Jesus took up his cross daily and chose to love us, ultimately giving his life so that we would experience the fullness of life in God. We who follow the way of Jesus are asked to love with that same offer of self for others, day after day, because there is no greater love than this.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
