Stuck.

The image of Jeremiah sinking into the mud has got to be one of the most pathetic in all of Scripture. Here is the great prophet—the envoy of God and counselor to kings—utterly dejected, thrown into a hole and left for dead, slowly slouching into the muck.

I can relate much more to Jeremiah’s predicament than I can to Jesus’ apocalyptic image of fire raining down from heaven. So often the struggles of faith and of life are more about inertia than they are about crisis. I just get stuck. Work is going nowhere. Prayer (when I remember) is empty. Church is dull. One day follows another, bringing nothing new. And I can’t seem to pull myself out of the slump. Then along comes some Ebed-melech to save me from the cistern.

Were we to continue reading today’s passage from Jeremiah, we would learn that on his way to help, Ebed-melech stopped by the palace linen closet and gathered some old, tattered rags. He sent these down to Jeremiah, instructing him to put the rags between his armpits and the ropes, presumably to save some pain as they hauled him up. It is a small gesture, an act of kindness and care.

Recognizing similar gestures in our own lives may be just what we need to lift us out of the mud. We are, as St. Paul reminds us, surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. Let us look up and see those who have come to help, bringing rags along with the rope.

All Loving God

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
