Matthew 20: 1-16.

1 'Now the kingdom of Heaven is like a landowner going out at daybreak to hire workers for his vineyard.

2 He made an agreement with the workers for one denarius a day and sent them to his vineyard.

3 Going out at about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place

4 and said to them, "You go to my vineyard too and I will give you a fair wage."

5 So they went. At about the sixth hour and again at about the ninth hour, he went out and did the same.

6 Then at about the eleventh hour he went out and found more men standing around, and he said to them, "Why have you been standing here idle all day?"

7 "Because no one has hired us," they answered. He said to them, "You go into my vineyard too."

8 In the evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his bailiff, "Call the workers and pay them their wages, starting with the last arrivals and ending with the first."

9 So those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came forward and received one denarius each.

10 When the first came, they expected to get more, but they too received one denarius each.

11 They took it, but grumbled at the landowner saying,

12 "The men who came last have done only one hour, and you have treated them the same as us, though we have done a heavy day's work in all the heat."

13 He answered one of them and said, "My friend, I am not being unjust to you; did we not agree on one denarius?

14 Take your earnings and go. I choose to pay the lastcomer as much as I pay you.

15 Have I no right to do what I like with my own? Why should you be envious because I am generous?"

16 Thus the last will be first, and the first, last.'

This Sounds Like Heresy.

When the laborers who were hired early in the day get angry, it’s because they catch on—they realize immediately that the “work” they’ve done doesn’t matter. In other words, they’ve learned the most important lesson there is to learn: If the work we do to get into heaven doesn’t matter, it must be because you can’t earn heaven!

[In this day and age], especially, this sounds like heresy. Our whole culture is based on the [notion] that with hard work, and the sweat of your brow, you can pull yourself up by your bootstraps and become a millionaire. What Jesus seems to be suggesting is a kind of “divine welfare”—that you can work hardly at all and get the same reward as those who work their tails off.

Jesus seems to be saying that you and I can come to Mass every Sunday, say our daily prayers, and go to novenas; that we can be kind and generous to our neighbor; that we can love our enemies, even—and that we’ll get the same reward as someone who has a deathbed conversion. This flies in the face of our sense of justice.

[Isaiah] tells us that “God’s ways are not our ways. His thoughts are not our thoughts.” And God’s generosity will therefore stick in our craw for the rest of our days until we give in. Until we surrender. Until we admit that we are not in control. I can’t work my way to heaven. I can’t pray my way to heaven. I can’t control who gets to heaven, and especially who doesn’t get there.

[There are] too many things wrong with the world that I can control. Let’s leave who gets to heaven to God. I guarantee you: It’ll free up a lot of our spare time.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
