Matthew 22: 1 - 14.

1 Jesus began to speak to them in parables once again,

2 'The kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son's wedding.

3 He sent his servants to call those who had been invited, but they would not come.

4 Next he sent some more servants with the words, "Tell those who have been invited: Look, my banquet is all prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to the wedding."

5 But they were not interested: one went off to his farm, another to his business,

6 and the rest seized his servants, maltreated them and killed them.

7 The king was furious. He despatched his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their town.

8 Then he said to his servants, "The wedding is ready; but as those who were invited proved to be unworthy,

9 go to the main crossroads and invite everyone you can find to come to the wedding."

10 So these servants went out onto the roads and collected together everyone they could find, bad and good alike; and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

11 When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a wedding garment,

12 and said to him, "How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment?" And the man was silent.

13 Then the king said to the attendants, "Bind him hand and foot and throw him into the darkness outside, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth."

14 For many are invited but not all are chosen.'

Be It Done to Me.

Today we honor Mary our Queen, whose relationship with God is summed up in her response to the angel Gabriel: “May it be done to me according to your will.”

The first reading shows us an opposite example. Jephthah doesn’t offer to do God’s will but tries to get God to do his will. The vow he makes is a bribe, one based on a false understanding of what God wants. God does not desire human sacrifice, a lesson God’s people learned later in their history.

Matthew Henry, an eighteenth-century Bible commentator, says this tale teaches us several things, including: that “our vows to God should not be as a purchase of the favour we desire, but to express gratitude to him,” and “we need to be very well-advised in making vows, lest we entangle ourselves.”

Perhaps a deeper lesson we should learn is that our God is a God of love, not of vengeance or of bribery. God always wills the best for every one of God’s creatures. We don’t need to bribe God or bargain with God. We simply need to align our wills with God’s will as Mary did.

Today’s psalm sums it up well: “Sacrifice or oblation you wished not, but ears open to obedience you gave me. . . . In the written scroll it is prescribed for me. To do your will, O my God, is my delight.”

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
