13 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut up the kingdom of Heaven in people's faces, neither going in yourselves nor allowing others to go who want to.

15 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over sea and land to make a single proselyte, and anyone who becomes one you make twice as fit for hell as you are.

16 'Alas for you, blind guides! You say, "If anyone swears by the Temple, it has no force; but anyone who swears by the gold of the Temple is bound."

17 Fools and blind! For which is of greater value, the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred?

18 Again, "If anyone swears by the altar it has no force; but anyone who swears by the offering on the altar, is bound."

19 You blind men! For which is of greater worth, the offering or the altar that makes the offering sacred?

20 Therefore, someone who swears by the altar is swearing by that and by everything on it.

21 And someone who swears by the Temple is swearing by that and by the One who dwells in it.

22 And someone who swears by heaven is swearing by the throne of God and by the One who is seated there.

Faith Is Always Personal.

The earliest of Paul’s letters, First Thessalonians gives us a snapshot of the relationship between the persecutor-turned-apostle and the early converts to Christianity. What is easy to miss is the profoundly intimate, fraternal, and relational tone with which Paul and his companions write to the community in Thessalonica. There is a sense of connection, love, appreciation, and care for a people that earlier welcomed his preaching of the Gospel and thereby encountered Christ. Though apart from each other now, the personal bond formed in the passing on of the faith nevertheless continues.

As members of the Body of Christ, we the baptized are incorporated into a personal faith, one that implies relationship not only with God but also with our Christian sisters and brothers all over the globe—regardless of whether we’ve met them. The Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Church puts it this way: “All the faithful, scattered though they be throughout the world, are in communion with each other in the Holy Spirit” (Lumen Gentium, no. 13). This reflects the same truth we find in Paul’s style of writing.

How about our style of living? If Christian faith is always personal, then what can we do to better recognize and express our communion with one another?

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
