31 He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath.

32 And his teaching made a deep impression on them because his word carried authority.

33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean devil, and he shouted at the top of his voice,

34 'Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God.'

35 But Jesus rebuked it, saying, 'Be quiet! Come out of him!' And the devil, throwing the man into the middle, went out of him without hurting him at all.

36 Astonishment seized them and they were all saying to one another, 'What is it in his words? He gives orders to unclean spirits with authority and power and they come out.'

37 And the news of him travelled all through the surrounding countryside.

A Way of Life and Light.

You are children of the light . . . stay alert and sober.

Habit is powerful—and healthy, up to a point. It saves a great deal of energy that would otherwise go into dozens of small decisions a day. Since I don’t have to decide which side of the bed to sleep on, or where to put the mail, or what to eat for weekday breakfast, I can spend the energy I would have put into those deliberations elsewhere. And habit can be the foundation of a virtuous life: habits are the exercises that strengthen us in love, joy, peace, patience, courage, justice, temperance, and fortitude.

But habit can also make us blind to possibilities and opportunities. It becomes a track, and then a groove, and sometimes a deep ditch. Since occasions of grace often arise quietly, in a by-the-way sort of fashion, we might miss them when they lie just outside that groove. . . .

The force of habit is strong, and it strengthens as time goes on. Resisting it requires intention. Deep intention—focusing mind, heart, will, and desire on the good you seek—reinforced by conversation, companionship, and prayer—is stronger still. It may be that the way to resist erosive habits is to set our hearts on a way of life that involves the play of the Spirit and prepares us for surprise.

To remember when we wake that “God laughs and plays,” as the Christian mystic Meister Eckhart wrote, might help us venture out of our grooves and ditches and follow the gentle guidance of the Spirit, who comes to us “new every morning.”

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.
