38 Leaving the synagogue he went to Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was in the grip of a high fever and they asked him to do something for her.

39 Standing over her he rebuked the fever and it left her. And she immediately got up and began to serve them.

40 At sunset all those who had friends suffering from diseases of one kind or another brought them to him, and laying his hands on each he cured them.

41 Devils too came out of many people, shouting, 'You are the Son of God.' But he warned them and would not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ.

42 When daylight came he left the house and made his way to a lonely place. The crowds went to look for him, and when they had caught up with him they wanted to prevent him leaving them,

43 but he answered, 'I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns too, because that is what I was sent to do.'

Taking Our Cue from Jesus.

I’m moved by Jesus’ single-heartedness that allowed him to turn away from the crowds who begged him to stay. Many of us might cave in when faced with a similar situation, out of a desire to help or simply not wanting to let others down. But Jesus knew he had a particular mission—right there, right then. And in a lesson we can all benefit from, even Jesus knew he couldn’t do it all.

It is a great challenge for us to focus on a mission of inclusive love amid the many things begging for our attention: from internet ads to social media threads, from the latest shiny gadgets to that project that might not really be necessary.

Perhaps we can take our cue from Jesus, who “left and went to a deserted place.” So often in Scripture we find Jesus in solitude, away and alone in order to listen to God and reconnect with his heart’s truth.

In my own life, I have found repeatedly that returning to silence and gently asking God for guidance allows me to reconnect with my internal compass. As the day-to-day concerns fall away, what arises are often surprising “mandates”: “Focus on being, not doing.” “Trust that you are enough.” “Remember the suffering of the world.”

Take a moment. Turn inward. Rest in the desert of your heart and ask, “God, for what purpose have I been sent?” Sometimes it is not as important to know the answer as it is to ask the question, again and again. As the poet Rainer Marie Rilke writes, “Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, one distant day live right into the answer.”

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
