1 Now it happened that he was standing one day by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the crowd pressing round him listening to the word of God,

2 when he caught sight of two boats at the water's edge. The fishermen had got out of them and were washing their nets.

3 He got into one of the boats -- it was Simon's -- and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat.

4 When he had finished speaking he said to Simon, 'Put out into deep water and pay out your nets for a catch.'

5 Simon replied, 'Master, we worked hard all night long and caught nothing, but if you say so, I will pay out the nets.'

6 And when they had done this they netted such a huge number of fish that their nets began to tear,

7 so they signalled to their companions in the other boat to come and help them; when these came, they filled both boats to sinking point.

8 When Simon Peter saw this he fell at the knees of Jesus saying, 'Leave me, Lord; I am a sinful man.'

9 For he and all his companions were completely awestruck at the catch they had made;

10 so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were Simon's partners. But Jesus said to Simon, 'Do not be afraid; from now on it is people you will be catching.'

11 Then, bringing their boats back to land they left everything and followed him.

Needless to say, going out into the deep involves a lot of trust. It involves taking a risk with the unknown.

Worth the Risk.

Recent popes, John Paul II and Francis among them, have repeatedly written or spoken about “putting out into deep waters.” There’s obviously a lot of challenge in this exhortation. I think of the feeling when I swim out a bit in the ocean, need a rest, and discover I have gone beyond where I can stand up. It’s cause for just a brief moment of panic.

Within Scripture, the sea is often portrayed as a place of turmoil, threat, and danger. For example, God addresses Job from “out of the storm” and asks: “Who shut within doors the sea, when it burst forth from the womb? . . . And said: Thus far shall you come but no farther, and here shall your proud waves stop?” (Job 38:1, 8, 11). The psalmist cries out: “Save me, God, for the waters have reached my neck” (Ps 69:2). Think of the apostles, alone at sea when a terrifying storm erupts (Mark 4:35-41 and parallels). Needless to say, going out into the deep involves a lot of trust. It involves taking a risk with the unknown.

So when Jesus asks Simon to “put out into deep water,” we can only imagine his exhaustion and frustration. After a whole night of fishing (trying to earn a living) and coming up with nothing, Peter has got to be at a low point of energy and hope. But something about Jesus inspires him to do it anyway, and of course the reward is far bigger than he could have imagined.

Trusting in Jesus, despite our weariness, our frustration, and even our skepticism, brings a far bigger reward than the equivalent of a net overflowing with fish. It means accepting the invitation to join Jesus in his great mission of healing and preaching the reign of God. Isn’t that worth the risk?
