1 It happened that one Sabbath he was walking through the cornfields, and his disciples were picking ears of corn, rubbing them in their hands and eating them.

2 Some of the Pharisees said, 'Why are you doing something that is forbidden on the Sabbath day?'

3 Jesus answered them, 'So you have not read what David did when he and his followers were hungry-

4 how he went into the house of God and took the loaves of the offering and ate them and gave them to his followers, loaves which the priests alone are allowed to eat?'

5 And he said to them, 'The Son of man is master of the Sabbath.'

Unlimited.

By washing their hands, sprinkling their heads, dressing in a special way, wearing their hair in threshes, avoiding some and speaking to others, saying some prayers, laying on hands, not picking any ears of wheat from the field on a Sabbath day, sticking to hundreds and hundreds of small little rules, they tried to get a grip on themselves, their neighbors, their lives, and on nature. What they really tried was to get a grip on God.

They thought they had caught him. They thought they knew what she would do. They thought they felt how he would react, what she would reward, what he would punish. They had cut him to their own image. They were sure that God was with them. Didn’t they fulfill all the conditions they had set themselves?

Jesus disagreed. That is too mild a word. Jesus threw out all their pretenses. Jesus was not against law, rituals, rites, or the words of sacred scripture. He was against any use of the law or the Bible, any rite or ritual that tried to control, check, and limit God’s love, mercy, and grace, and consequently human love, grace, and mercy.

That controlling, checking, and limiting of God and God’s power is what we all do too often through our rituals and rites. . . .

In the gospel of today, Jesus turns against all those human laws and restrictions that make us fearful and afraid, that restrict God’s love, mercy, and grace, and overlook the real command God gave us all: to love one another unreservedly, to share our bread unrestrictedly.

So don’t be afraid: God’s love and mercy and grace is greater than any of our rites. Don’t use your rites, rituals, theology, Bible, your personal or societal values to limit God . . . Never. Amen.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
