6 Now on another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and began to teach, and a man was present, and his right hand was withered.

7 The scribes and the Pharisees were watching him to see if he would cure somebody on the Sabbath, hoping to find something to charge him with.

8 But he knew their thoughts; and he said to the man with the withered hand, 'Get up and stand out in the middle!' And he came forward and stood there.

9 Then Jesus said to them, 'I put it to you: is it permitted on the Sabbath to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to destroy it?'

10 Then he looked round at them all and said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' He did so, and his hand was restored.

11 But they were furious and began to discuss the best way of dealing with Jesus.

But Sunday invites the disciples of Jesus, the Son of Man who will appear in the last times, to look further than this day that the Lord has made.

To Do Good Rather Than Evil?

Jesus’ question is not genuine, because no one ever said that there was a day on which to commit evil and kill. But to do such things on the sabbath would be an abomination. Jesus knows full well that all his hearers think the same. But to abstain from doing good, is it not evil? And not to save a life when one could do so, is that not to kill? Truly, if there is a day when to do good and to save is more binding than ever, it is the sabbath and, for Christians, Sunday.

Jesus, condemned for the stands he had taken against certain ways of understanding and practicing the Law, would be put to death because the Pharisees had recourse to those who held political power. This urges us to become conscious of the high stakes involved in the practice of the Day of the Lord and to test our ideas and conduct against Jesus’ teaching.

The keeping of Sunday is neither an obligation to be fulfilled will-nilly in a legalistic frame of mind nor a religious custom that is to be taken lightly. But Sunday invites the disciples of Jesus, the Son of Man who will appear in the last times, to look further than this day that the Lord has made. Their eyes already behold God’s rest, into which Jesus has led them through his pasch (Heb 3:7-11). It is a day of freedom on which we must do good, a festive day, the Day of the Lord, which announces and sacramentally anticipates the endless feast in the fully realized kingdom.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
