12 Now it happened in those days that he went onto the mountain to pray; and he spent the whole night in prayer to God.

13 When day came he summoned his disciples and picked out twelve of them; he called them 'apostles':

14 Simon whom he called Peter, and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,

15 Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon called the Zealot,

16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor.

17 He then came down with them and stopped at a piece of level ground where there was a large gathering of his disciples, with a great crowd of people from all parts of Judaea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon

18 who had come to hear him and to be cured of their diseases. People tormented by unclean spirits were also cured,

19 and everyone in the crowd was trying to touch him because power came out of him that cured them all.

Level and Loving Ground.

Wanting to “level the playing field,” to make life fair and balanced for all who are disadvantaged is a Christian “thing,” learned from the Gospels—love your neighbor as yourself.

We learn this in today’s scene, when Jesus comes down from the mountain where he was communing with God to stand on “a stretch of level ground” with a great jostling crowd—sick people and healthy people, saints and sinners, mentally deranged and balanced. He stands with each and all of us. Not over us, but with us. Jesus knows what it is like to be human—to feel energetic and tired, to be well groomed and slovenly, rejected and accepted, hailed as a great teacher and misunderstood. Nothing human, nothing earthy or earthly is foreign to Jesus.

The scene in today’s Gospel is a great image for the Incarnation. Wanting to be one of us, Divine Love breaks through becoming an integral part of all creation in the humanity of Jesus. Through his dying and rising, Jesus’ flesh, the materialspiritual stuff of his humanity, is fully drawn into the Divine Eternal Love—and with Jesus, so is our humanity. Jesus the Christ, in whom “dwells the whole fullness of the deity bodily,”is through his Spirit now living, rejoicing, suffering, dying,
rising in us. In Christ, through the Holy Spirit, God’s compassion is living in us, suffering and rejoicing in our experiences of joy, pain, and sorrow. We can help level the playing field by sharing that divine compassion generously with others.

All Loving God

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
