39 He also told them a parable, 'Can one blind person guide another? Surely both will fall into a pit?

40 Disciple is not superior to teacher; but fully trained disciple will be like teacher.

41 Why do you observe the splinter in your brother's eye and never notice the great log in your own?

42 How can you say to your brother, "Brother, let me take out that splinter in your eye," when you cannot see the great log in your own? Hypocrite! Take the log out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take out the splinter in your brother's eye.

To Lead as We Are Led.

Jesus put it simply: the blind shouldn’t lead the blind. Still, we do it all the time. Our own actions and allegiances all too often reflect the values of a society diseased with war, violence, and extreme partisan rhetoric. These grave symptoms serve to show us how misguided we’ve become. Luke reminds us, through Jesus’ words, that the outcome is never good: we’re bound to wind up in a ditch.

Jesus shows us another way. He shows us what true leadership is, and it’s not what we typically think. Jesus has a way of turning the world on its head; it’s another indication of how far ahead Jesus was (and is!). Remember, you can only lead as far as you’re willing to go yourself. And Jesus was out there.

How else can you explain an expectation of blessing those who curse you or turning the other cheek when wronged? These are no small tasks, but they are things Jesus did and asked his followers to do. They forever challenge us. But isn’t that the point? Being a Christian isn’t easy. It so often comes with a cost. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Freedom has always been an expensive thing.” It demands something of us. In this case, that we grow up and become more like the one we say we follow.

What’s needed is for us to be honest with ourselves so that we can be honest with others.

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.
