Luke 7: 1- 10.

1 When he had come to the end of all he wanted the people to hear, he went into Capernaum.

2 A centurion there had a servant, a favourite of his, who was sick and near death.

3 Having heard about Jesus he sent some Jewish elders to him to ask him to come and heal his servant.

4 When they came to Jesus they pleaded earnestly with him saying, 'He deserves this of you,

5 because he is well disposed towards our people; he built us our synagogue himself.'

6 So Jesus went with them, and was not very far from the house when the centurion sent word to him by some friends to say to him, 'Sir, do not put yourself to any trouble because I am not worthy to have you under my roof;

7 and that is why I did not presume to come to you myself; let my boy be cured by your giving the word.

8 For I am under authority myself, and have soldiers under me; and I say to one man, "Go," and he goes; to another, "Come here," and he comes; to my servant, "Do this," and he does it.'

9 When Jesus heard these words he was astonished at him and, turning round, said to the crowd following him, 'I tell you, not even in Israel have I found faith as great as this.'

10 And when the messengers got back to the house they found the servant in perfect health.

We can at least strive for something blessedly human, and for the little snatches of grace that are accessible if we take time to notice.

Little Snatches of Grace.

I start every morning with such good intentions. Ensconced in my favorite chair, I read from a calming spiritual resource and journal my thoughts. Then I allow myself to sink into the quiet, calm flow of prayer. No sooner am I up from my chair—and sometimes even beforehand—a news item flashes across my vision and everything feels like it’s gone to pot. That rosy glow fades, and the world comes into focus. I am nowhere close to lifting my hands in prayer “without anger or argument.”

There are a few things that set me back on track. The poet May Sarton urges a “return to the most human” and sets me searching for those things that restore a sense of understanding, compassion, tenderness, and levity. Photos of my granddaughter always do the trick, as does a friendly email, the brilliant blueness of a Colorado sky, the affirmative beauty of Psalm 139, and a taste of the dark chocolate my husband leaves on my desk each day.

These are not easy times to achieve St. Paul’s idyll of tranquil lives filled with devotion and dignity, but wasn’t the same true in his day? We can at least strive for something blessedly human, and for the little snatches of grace that are accessible if we take time to notice. What I do know is that these good intentions matter, particularly in drawing us toward lifting our hands, heavy laden as they might be, toward God’s loving and gracious presence.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.
