Luke 7: 11 - 17.

11 It happened that soon afterwards he went to a town called Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a great number of people.

12 Now when he was near the gate of the town there was a dead man being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a considerable number of the townspeople was with her.

13 When the Lord saw her he felt sorry for her and said to her, 'Don't cry.'

14 Then he went up and touched the bier and the bearers stood still, and he said, 'Young man, I tell you: get up.'

15 And the dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother.

16 Everyone was filled with awe and glorified God saying, 'A great prophet has risen up among us; God has visited his people.'

17 And this view of him spread throughout Judaea and all over the countryside.

Jesus, moved by compassion, offers the most precious of commodities to the suffering and vulnerable. He offers hope.

Arise.

As if anguish over the loss of a loved one were not enough, a widow in first-century Israel also had to face the constant state of financial vulnerability and utter dependence on others. In today’s Gospel, this woman is nameless, capturing well the tragic sense of a widow as almost a nonperson. Now add to her plight a second loss, this time the loss of her son. One cannot imagine the waves of despair and hopelessness crashing over her.

Jesus drew near to the widow at the “gate of the city”—a place of transition, a liminal space full of possibilities. Here, the two crowds also meet. One accompanies Jesus and is celebrating his healing of the centurion’s servant. The other accompanies the widow and mourns the loss of her son. Jesus, moved by compassion, offers the most precious of commodities to the suffering and vulnerable. He offers hope. With just a word, “arise,” he resuscitates the dead, bringing new life to the grieving widow, her son, and their community.

Though the widow’s situation may seem far removed from our own, we need to be aware of the many in our communities and world who share her sense of despair and helplessness. It is to these disadvantaged and vulnerable that Jesus came, and so must we.

How do we respond to the many faces of human suffering and despair? What word do we need to hear so that we can move from loss to transformation? Only say the word, Lord, and we shall live . . .
