A Different Narrative.

Neuroscientists argue about storytelling as an essential component of our evolution, while psychologists press the importance of storytelling for personal health. Philosopher Richard Kearney, however, takes an ethical turn: asserting the foundational role of a “narrative” imagination for creating empathy. Storytelling invites us into worlds that are not our own and entices us to care for the “others” in those worlds. Conversely, Kearney believes that the failure of the narrative imagination makes possible genocides and other atrocities: “if we possess narrative sympathy—enabling us to see the world from the other’s point of view—we cannot kill. If we do not, we cannot love” (On Stories, 140).

The liturgical year’s calendar of saints is often treated as a collection of narratives that inspire personal piety and holiness. What the feast of St. Vincent de Paul reminds us, however, is that many heroes in holiness were concerned with large-scale religious and societal change: something that concerned Jesus as well. In an era when our social imaginary seems more focused on stock markets and border security, political advancement and the thwarting of enemies, Vincent
proclaims a different narrative. Christians are not only to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, give drink to the thirsty, and embrace the outcast, but in the process to transform society with our renewed Jesus empathy. Only then will today’s words from the prophet ring true, and we will experience God’s true peace.

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
