45 But they did not understand what he said; it was hidden from them so that they should not see the meaning of it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

Closer.

See, I am coming to dwell among you, says the Lord.

God is not failing us when we don’t feel his presence.

Let’s not say: God doesn’t do what I pray for so much, and therefore I don’t pray anymore.

God exists, and he exists even more, the farther you feel from him.

God is closer to you when you think he is farther away and doesn’t hear you.

When you feel the anguished desire for God to come near because you don’t feel him present, then God is very close to your anguish.

When are we going to understand that God not only gives happiness but also tests our faithfulness in moments of affliction?

It is then that prayer and religion have most merit: when one is faithful in spite of not feeling the Lord’s presence.

Let us learn from that cry of Christ that God is always our Father and never forsakes us, and that we are closer to him than we think.

St. Oscar Romero (1917–1980) became archbishop of San Salvador in 1977. A prophetic voice of the poor who was ultimately martyred at the altar while saying Mass, Romero was canonized on October 14, 2018.

In contemplating Mary in the Scriptures we impregnate ourselves with her spirit. We go without delay into the “hill country” of the lives of young people, bringing them news of the justice and faithful mercy of God….we become the face of Mary to them.

Closing Prayer

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
