Wayfaring Strangers.

We have sinned in the Lord’s sight and disobeyed.

O God of seeing, after we have swallowed the knowledge of good and evil and our eyes are opened, how can we sing your song? When the scales have dropped away, when the clay has been washed off, when we put on the soft garments of grace you made for us, we stumble dazzled by the light. We who love darkness more than you, tie on blindfolds to simulate the night.

Wayfaring strangers, we wander here in these soft skins, exiles on earth, yearning for a better country. We had bit down and tasted, chewed and swallowed the fruit. Our eyes were opened, and we had seen. We had witnessed something that we could not speak of, yet must tell. We really weren’t absolutely sure what it was we had seen, but we thought most of the time that it was God. It is true we asked for it, prayed for it—to see God and live, that is. Perhaps it would have been better to die. Perhaps there are very good reasons why persons who see God rarely live to tell the tale. For now how could we sing a song in this strange land—this earth where gravity weighed hearts to the soil; and mind lay flattened between the pages of time? . . .

It is too much for us. It is all too much for us. To have eaten what we have eaten. To have seen what we have seen. To know what we know. One day I prayed for hours and could only pray: “Yes. Yes. Yes, there is light. Yes, there is hope. Yes, there is love.” Even though I felt none of it.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
