17 The seventy-two came back rejoicing. 'Lord,' they said, 'even the devils submit to us when we use your name.'

18 He said to them, 'I watched Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

19 Look, I have given you power to tread down serpents and scorpions and the whole strength of the enemy; nothing shall ever hurt you.

20 Yet do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you; rejoice instead that your names are written in heaven.'

21 Just at this time, filled with joy by the Holy Spirit, he said, 'I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to little children. Yes, Father, for that is what it has pleased you to do.

22 Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.'

23 Then turning to his disciples he spoke to them by themselves, 'Blessed are the eyes that see what you see,

24 for I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.'

With Minds Now Open.

Many desired to see what you see, but did not see it.

First the prophets and Moses knew and proclaimed one and the same triumph of the Lord’s cross as the apostles did; but the prophets did it from time to time, in figurative and cryptic utterances, whereas the apostles and their successors, once the light of the gospel was disclosed, always proclaimed it clearly. Thus the entire Christian people now ought to know and confess the faith which up to that time only some knew. Hence it is here said that the Lord, when the mysteries of his incarnation had been brought to perfection, opened the minds of his disciples so that they could understand the scriptures. He opened their minds so that they could understand plainly what the prophets had said obscurely, and could hand on to believers what they needed to understand. He opened their minds so that they could understand that whatever he had done or taught when he was in the flesh, these same things the prophets had predicted that he would do and teach. . . .

But once his passion and resurrection, and also his ascension into heaven, were brought to completion, not only was faith in his name proclaimed more widely and clearly to their posterity, namely to the nation of the Jews, but it was revealed by the same compassion from on high to foreign countries too. And so it was necessary for the Christ to come in the flesh, to suffer and to rise, because the human race was not capable of being restored to life, redeemed from death, [and] directed to the hope of its own resurrection, except by his presence, passion and resurrection.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
