5 The apostles said to the Lord, 'Increase our faith.'

6 The Lord replied, 'If you had faith like a mustard seed you could say to this mulberry tree, "Be uprooted and planted in the sea," and it would obey you.

7 'Which of you, with a servant ploughing or minding sheep, would say to him when he returned from the fields, "Come and have your meal at once"?

8 Would he not be more likely to say, "Get my supper ready; fasten your belt and wait on me while I eat and drink. You yourself can eat and drink afterwards"?

9 Must he be grateful to the servant for doing what he was told?

Praise and Prizes.

I’m embarrassed to admit that my junior high nickname was “Paula Perfect.” Suggest a difficult task to the girl I used to be, and you might as well be talking to an eager Labrador, quivering on the bank of a duck-jammed lake. Maybe this is why today’s Gospel never sat well with me. As I saw it, here was a group of dedicated employees who’d been toiling all day in the fields yet were expected to skip dinner and a hardearned wer in order to wait tables in the boss’s dining
room. Worse yet, they were not to look for any thank you’s. They were only doing their job—the thing they were supposed to do.

Perhaps these verses hit a nerve because, young as I was, I’d already identified an unsavory trait in myself. I did not work hard purely for the joy of working. I worked to gain the admiration of others and for the perks that follow achievement— praise, prizes, raises. But Jesus was clearly on a different page. And this parable was full of bad news for someone like me who lived for acclaim.

When I finally gave up being Paula Perfect, however, I was able to see that the bad news is really good news. No matter how many ducks I fetch or how eagerly I fetch them, I can’t impress Jesus. He’s looking for something else: the real me, stripped of self-regard and ready to serve.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
