38 In the course of their journey he came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.

39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking.

40 Now Martha, who was distracted with all the serving, came to him and said, 'Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me.'

41 But the Lord answered, 'Martha, Martha,' he said, 'you worry and fret about so many things,

42 and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part, and it is not to be taken from her.'

Busy Bodies, Listening Hearts.

I can imagine Martha preparing food when a thought pops into her head: “Where’s my sister?” She looks over and sees a smiling Mary just sitting there listening to Jesus. “That’s not fair,” she may have told herself. Why should her sister be enjoying the Lord’s company while Martha is “burdened with much serving”? There is an everyday quality to this reading. Coworkers feel workloads are unfairly distributed. Siblings feel they are given an unfair number of chores.

I can imagine similar thoughts crossing Jonah’s mind when God asked him to go to the capital of Assyria and preach against the people’s wickedness. Why does God ask Jonah and not someone else to go to Nineveh? Well, God calls us all to different things. And it is impossible to discern what God wills for us when we busy ourselves with what God wills for someone else.

Martha is busy, not only with serving but also with judging what Mary should be doing. She goes so far as to tell Jesus what to tell her sister! The Lord responds by telling Martha there “is need for only one thing.”

What is that “one thing”? We all are called to both contemplation and action, so it cannot be a choice between the two. But we cannot busy ourselves with the plans God has for others. We must instead silence our minds and listen to the plan God has for each one of us. We will find that doing God’s will is “the best part.”

Closing Prayer

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
