1 Now it happened that he was in a certain place praying, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said, 'Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.'

2 He said to them, 'When you pray, this is what to say: Father, may your name be held holy, your kingdom come;

3 give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins,

4 for we ourselves forgive each one who is in debt to us. And do not put us to the test.'

And so we pray—for an opening of our eyes, a softening of our hearts, and a washing over of God’s mercy on us all.

The Long View of Love.

The people of Nineveh were notoriously mired in all kinds of evil, so it was with great reluctance and no hope for success that Jonah had set out to preach God’s message of repentance. Jonah traveled throughout the city, proclaiming its imminent destruction at the hands of a righteous God.

But the story takes an unexpected turn when God’s mercy prevails, the Ninevites repent . . . and are not destroyed. Jonah swings from anger to depression to outrage at the perceived unfairness of God. In Jonah’s eyes, the Ninevites deserved to be destroyed.

How often are we caught in a similar bind? We anticipate others’ failures, perhaps even secretly hope for their collapse. We believe they were wrong or “had it coming” for such dubious reasons as we never liked them, trusted them, agreed with them, or voted for them.

And yet mercy is never about fairness or logic.

What would it take for us to see as God does, as God saw the Ninevites? To see with the long view of love and care about the entire family rather than our own small perspective? Like Jonah, we can worry about what is reasonable and fair, and miss the miracles that are possible in the face of mercy. Or under the merciful shade of a sprawling gourd plant, an undeserved gift from God.

“Have you reason to be angry?” God asks Jonah when the plant withers and dies. Jonah is “angry enough to die!” Wow. That angry. That blind. It should give us pause to see how lost we can become in a story of our own making. And so we pray—for an opening of our eyes, a softening of our hearts, and a washing over of God’s mercy on us all.
