47 'Alas for you because you build tombs for the prophets, the people your ancestors killed!

48 In this way you both witness to what your ancestors did and approve it; they did the killing, you do the building.

49 'And that is why the Wisdom of God said, "I will send them prophets and apostles; some they will slaughter and persecute,

50 so that this generation will have to answer for every prophet's blood that has been shed since the foundation of the world,

51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the Temple." Yes, I tell you, this generation will have to answer for it all.

From Woe to Joy.

“Woe to you, scholars of the law!” This admonition always punches me in the gut. Time to check in with my theologian self: What have I done with the gifts of learning, knowledge, and intellect God has given me? Did I use these gifts to enter into a closer, deeper relationship with God? Has knowledge led me to virtue, to discipleship, to love? Has it humbled me in worship before God? Have I used these gifts God has given me to bless others? Did I guide others into deeper relationship with God? Woe to me if I did not.

Our generous God blesses us all with gifts and asks of us only this: to accept them, live them out fully, and to bless others with them in turn. A scholar who lords his or her knowledge over others has missed the point of the gift. A person of wealth who has no regard for the poor has missed the point of the gift. A person in power who ignores the powerless has also missed the same point. God’s gifts are about building up the family of God, not about rewarding individual members with special privileges. Woe to us if we hoard and hinder God’s gifts, whether knowledge or wealth, earthly power, talent, or ability. Woe to us if what we say or do keeps another person away from God.

Woe becomes joy when we turn away from self and toward the One who has blessed us. Woe becomes joy when we accept God’s gifts with humility and gratitude.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
