Luke 12: 13 - 21.

13 A man in the crowd said to him, 'Master, tell my brother to give me a share of our inheritance.'

14 He said to him, 'My friend, who appointed me your judge, or the arbitrator of your claims?'

15 Then he said to them, 'Watch, and be on your guard against avarice of any kind, for life does not consist in possessions, even when someone has more than he needs.'

16 Then he told them a parable, 'There was once a rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land,

17 thought to himself, "What am I to do? I have not enough room to store my crops."

18 Then he said, "This is what I will do: I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain and my goods in them,

19 and I will say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, have a good time."

20 But God said to him, "Fool! This very night the demand will be made for your soul; and this hoard of yours, whose will it be then?"

21 So it is when someone stores up treasure for himself instead of becoming rich in the sight of God.'

In the End.

You never see a U-Haul behind a hearse, the modern proverb goes. This funeral image hits close to home. Each in our own way, we struggle with the temptation to build bigger barns to hold our possessions. For some, those barns might be filled with financial wealth. For others, the temptation may take the form of collecting honors, popularity, or fancy titles. In themselves, money, accolades, friends, and career achievements are not bad, but they are seductive. Rather than hold them gratefully, we are tempted to define ourselves by them, especially when we struggle with self-doubt, competitiveness, or loneliness. Deep down, we know that Jesus is right: “One’s life does not consist of possessions.” They give us only fleeting satisfaction.

So what are we to do when we start designing those bigger barns? While planning for our future is perfectly reasonable, we should try to distinguish between what we need and what we want. Moreover, we do well to discern the temptation when it hits. Why do we feel the need to pile up more money, friends, or attention? What’s missing in our life? What really soothes our insecurities and fills the emptiness we all experience at times?

In his Spiritual Exercises, St. Ignatius offered very practical counsel: when making a decision, imagine yourself on your deathbed. From that perspective, what matters most to you now? This deathbed perspective is not meant to be morbid but liberating. It exposes our temptation to pile up riches or build monuments to ourselves. Freed from excessive self-preoccupation, we realize that in the end, love is the bountiful harvest we most deeply want to preserve and share.
