1 Seeing the crowds, he went onto the mountain. And when he was seated his disciples came to him.

2 Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them:

3 How blessed are the poor in spirit: the kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

4 Blessed are the gentle: they shall have the earth as inheritance.

5 Blessed are those who mourn: they shall be comforted.

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for uprightness: they shall have their fill.

7 Blessed are the merciful: they shall have mercy shown them.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart: they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers: they shall be recognised as children of God.

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted in the cause of uprightness: the kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

11 'Blessed are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny against you falsely on my account.

12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven; this is how they persecuted the prophets before you.

To Be a Saint.

God knows that our road to blessedness involves embracing what we most despise in ourselves, and in others. The invitation to a saintly life presents itself when our own daughter or son embraces a lifestyle that flies in the face of all our own values and beliefs. The invitation to a saintly life comes in a diagnosis of AIDS, or cancer, or Alzheimer’s. . . . In the eyes of the world, there is nothing heroic about such demands, nothing noteworthy about such invitations. Many of the saints were not seen as heroic or noteworthy in their own day, but as we look back, they show us a life lived in solidarity with God’s poor and simple ones. They show us a life completely grounded in Jesus Christ. In turn, they invite us to graft our lives onto Jesus in every respect. To be a saint is to let God mould our hearts with mercy and to pursue true justice, which cares not only about rights but also about needs. . . .

To be a saint means allowing God’s love to set us on fire, feeling inwardly seduced by God, and letting the Spirit transform our thoughts, feelings and actions. To live such a saintly life is the ultimate calling of all those who are baptized in Jesus. . . . It is your job and my job, the job of God’s ordinary men, women and children, to take our place with all the saints, and to let God’s light come in through the ordinariness of our daily lives, so that the world will become a better place for all.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
