25 Great crowds accompanied him on his way and he turned and spoke to them.

26 'Anyone who comes to me without hating father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too, cannot be my disciple.

27 No one who does not carry his cross and come after me can be my disciple.

28 'And indeed, which of you here, intending to build a tower, would not first sit down and work out the cost to see if he had enough to complete it?

29 Otherwise, if he laid the foundation and then found himself unable to finish the work, anyone who saw it would start making fun of him and saying,

30 "Here is someone who started to build and was unable to finish."

31 Or again, what king marching to war against another king would not first sit down and consider whether with ten thousand men he could stand up to the other who was advancing against him with twenty thousand?

32 If not, then while the other king was still a long way off, he would send envoys to sue for peace.

33 So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple without giving up all that he owns.

Stripped of Earthly Riches.

A beggar woman prayed to God with these words:

“Lord, I thank You that Your love has stripped me of earthly riches and clothed and fed me from the resources of others. I thank You for this because every familiar possession that clings to me and causes me pleasure must become completely foreign to me. Lord, thank You for taking my eyesight from me and for serving me with others’ eyes. Thank You for taking the use of my hands away from me and for serving me with the hands of others. Thank You for taking from me the power of my heart and for serving me with others’ strong hearts.

“On behalf of all those people who help me, I beg You, reward them here on earth with Your divine love. Help them continue to turn to You and serve You with goodness until they die holy deaths.”

Closing Prayer

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
