Luke 17: 11 - 19.

11 Now it happened that on the way to Jerusalem he was travelling in the borderlands of Samaria and Galilee.

12 As he entered one of the villages, ten men suffering from a virulent skin-disease came to meet him. They stood some way off

13 and called to him, 'Jesus! Master! Take pity on us.'

14 When he saw them he said, 'Go and show yourselves to the priests.' Now as they were going away they were cleansed.

15 Finding himself cured, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice

16 and threw himself prostrate at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. The man was a Samaritan.

17 This led Jesus to say, 'Were not all ten made clean? The other nine, where are they?

18 It seems that no one has come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner.'

19 And he said to the man, 'Stand up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you.'

Grateful, Healthy, and Whole.

We can understand the lepers of this Gospel story to represent those whose Christian faith is all mixed up with various errors. These errors are like diseased spots disfiguring a healthy skin. The lepers stand far off from the divine Teacher, but still they call on him to cleanse away the spots of false doctrine by his word of truth. . . .

The varied colour of leprous skin is also a figure of disunity in the Church. When Paul and Barnabas went up to Jerusalem to explain the Gospel they’d been preaching to the Gentiles, James and Peter and John, reckoned to be pillars of the Church, gave their right hands in fellowship [Acts 15]. This conference showed the Apostolic doctrine in its uniform healthy appearance, all discolouring of disunity excluded. . . .

The ingratitude of the nine cleansed lepers continues to be manifested in the Church. Some people may indeed through membership of the Church and acceptance of all her doctrine be free from spiritual leprosy: but they fail to recognize the one who cleansed them, and become inflated with pride. The Apostle speaks of such people: they knew God, but did not worship him as God or give thanks to him [Rom 1:21]. In so far as they knew God, they were cleansed from leprosy, but in so far as they were ungrateful, they remained imperfect.

The number nine, needing one to make it up to ten, signifies imperfection. The one who returned to give thanks signifies the unity of the Church, and of the Kingdom of Heaven: and he has this unity even without the other nine. . . . Subject to the King, then, this Samaritan preserved the unity of the Kingdom by his humble devotion.
