22 He said to the disciples, 'A time will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of man and will not see it.

23 They will say to you, "Look, it is there!" or, "Look, it is here!" Make no move; do not set off in pursuit;

24 for as the lightning flashing from one part of heaven lights up the other, so will be the Son of man when his Day comes.

25 But first he is destined to suffer grievously and be rejected by this generation.

Within and Among Us.

Jesus could be a confusing teacher: “The coming of the Kingdom of God cannot be observed . . . Just as lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other.” Since a flash of lightning is hard to miss, what’s not to observe? Luke hides the key in between the two statements, when Jesus says, “The Kingdom of God is among you.”

Translating from biblical Greek to modern languages is always a challenge. Some translations say, “The Kingdom of God is within you,” others, “among you.” Perhaps it’s like the line from an old song, “You can’t have one without the other.” We relate to one another from what is within us; we draw one another forth, allowing the potential within each of us to become real through the bonds of relationship. The Kingdom of God comes from within and happens among us.

The book of Wisdom gives us a litany of the manifestations of God’s Spirit: “intelligent . . . holy . . . kind . . . firm . . . subtle . . . mobile beyond all motion.” All of that movement describes qualities of the Spirit’s presence within and among us.

When and how will the Kingdom of God come? Jesus’ answer could have come from the Book of Wisdom: “passing into holy souls from age to age,” Wisdom can be observed within “friends of God and prophets.” Each of us has been given gifts of the Spirit, gifts that will be drawn forth through our relationships with one another. Today we are invited to contemplate and celebrate the variety of ways God’s Spirit is manifest within and among us.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
