35 Now it happened that as he drew near to Jericho there was a blind man sitting at the side of the road begging.

36 When he heard the crowd going past he asked what it was all about,

37 and they told him that Jesus the Nazarene was passing by.

38 So he called out, 'Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me.'

39 The people in front scolded him and told him to keep quiet, but he only shouted all the louder, 'Son of David, have pity on me.'

40 Jesus stopped and ordered them to bring the man to him, and when he came up, asked him,

41 'What do you want me to do for you?' 'Sir,' he replied, 'let me see again.'

42 Jesus said to him, 'Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you.'

43 And instantly his sight returned and he followed him praising God, and all the people who saw it gave praise to God.

Need a Miracle.

I walked by her one afternoon on the way home from work: a woman sitting on the sidewalk on Third Avenue in New York City. She was young, I’d guess in her early 30s. She didn’t look like someone I’d think of as destitute. She was well dressed, reading a newspaper, a cup with a few coins and bills resting by her feet. As I got closer, I noticed a cardboard sign in front of her, bearing three simple words. Her sign said: “Need a miracle.”

I was in a rush for an appointment and hurried on past her. To this day, I regret that I didn’t stop to ask her story or at least buy her a cup of coffee. In the days that followed, I would pass that spot and look for her. I never saw her again. I wonder what happened to her.

Maybe she ended up getting her miracle. I will never know.

But whenever I encounter this Gospel, I think of her. And I think, too, of the blind beggar Jesus met. At one time or another, we all need a miracle. We are all weak or wounded, desperate or searching. That beggar could be any of us—just like that woman on the sidewalk with her sign.

Do we know what we are searching for, what miracle we truly need? I wonder if part of what led to the blind man’s healing was that he was able to put his need into words: “Lord, please let me see.”

There you have a simple prayer of faith and hope—a yearning for possibility, for clarity, for sight.

Need a miracle?
