44 they will dash you and the children inside your walls to the ground; they will leave not one stone standing on another within you, because you did not recognise the moment of your visitation.'

He Saw and Wept.

My husband and I live in one of those “hipster” cities where both the population and gentrification have increased dramatically the past few years. Rent prices are astronomical, home prices are prohibitive, and rush hour is now about twelve hours. The biggest change, though, is the way this press of people in a previously more open space seems to change the way humans normally interact.

“Didn’t you see me?” asked the woman who drove her SUV through the red light, just in time for me to crash into her. Well, yes, I did see her, and it scared me half to death. Since when does the burden of avoiding crashes fall on the “other”? Here I am, and hurried I am, so make way for me?

A recent conversation at my husband’s workplace seems to capture this dis-ease. Several of his colleagues indulged in the fantasy of whether they would steal two million dollars if they could get away with it. All but one—you can guess which one—said they would. Yes, they’d have to move out of the country and change their identities, but the burden of bringing them to justice would be on the “other.”

What a shocking attitude, and yet the ways of peace have been eluding humans from the beginning. Every time and place has its echoes of astonishing selfishness and deafness to the prophets of the day. “Didn’t you see me?” I imagine Jesus asking of us, as that internal regulator of right and wrong finally burns out. “I was weeping for you.”
