Hanging on His Words.

Once, moments before an indie rock concert started, I found myself standing near the front of a club that was packed with young adults. Somehow, a seventy-year-old woman pushed her way through the crowd and stood next to me. She was the aunt of the lead singer. When I told her I hadn’t heard the band before, she assured me I would enjoy myself. The group came on stage and opened with a song so beautiful and powerful that the bustling crowd immediately fell silent, rapt in attention. I looked down at the singer’s aunt, my eyes wide. She nodded, knowingly.

Today’s Gospel passage makes me wonder what it would’ve been like to have been in the crowd at the temple, listening to Jesus teach. Would I have hung on every word, engrossed like I was at the rock concert? Or would I have felt threatened by his message and joined up with the angry detractors who wanted him killed? Honestly, I might most closely identify with the third group mentioned in the passage: the merchants selling things in the temple area. Sometimes, like them, I’m a little bit cynical and hardened.

This is why fellow travelers on the journey of faith are so important—companions who hear the words of Jesus and are so inspired they can’t help but want to share the good news. When I’m in a spiritual dry patch, I lean on them. These “friends in the Spirit” are like the lead singer’s aunt, in a way: their genuine devotion is enough to make a believer out of just about anyone, even me. I imagine her in the temple area, shoving her way to the front, calling out to total strangers on the edges of the room, “You just have to hear this guy.”
