27 Some Sadducees -- those who argue that there is no resurrection -- approached him and they put this question to him,

28 'Master, Moses prescribed for us, if a man's married brother dies childless, the man must marry the widow to raise up children for his brother.

29 Well then, there were seven brothers; the first, having married a wife, died childless.

30 The second

31 and then the third married the widow. And the same with all seven, they died leaving no children.

32 Finally the woman herself died.

33 Now, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be, since she had been married to all seven?'

34 Jesus replied, 'The children of this world take wives and husbands,

35 but those who are judged worthy of a place in the other world and in the resurrection from the dead do not marry

36 because they can no longer die, for they are the same as the angels, and being children of the resurrection they are children of God.

37 And Moses himself implies that the dead rise again, in the passage about the bush where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.

38 Now he is God, not of the dead, but of the living; for to him everyone is alive.'

39 Some scribes then spoke up. They said, 'Well put, Master.'

40 They did not dare to ask him any more questions.

The one who was adored by the prophets as the living God is the God of the living. It is his Word who spoke to Moses, the same Word who also put the Sadducees to silence and revealed the gift of resurrection, thus revealing both truths to those who are blind. He revealed both the resurrection and the true God. For if he is not the God of the dead, but of the living, and he was also called the God of the fathers who were sleeping, it is quite clear that they live to God. They have not passed out of existence, since they are children of the resurrection. Our Lord himself is the resurrection, as he himself declares, I am the resurrection and the life [John 11:25]. But the fathers are his children; for it is said by the prophet: Instead of your fathers, you shall have sons [Ps 45:17]. Christ himself, therefore, together with the Father, is the God of the living, who spoke to Moses, and who was also manifested to the fathers.

And teaching this very thing, he said to the Jews: Your father Abraham rejoiced that he should see my day; and he saw it, and was glad [John 8:56]. What does he mean? Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness [Gen 15:6]. In the first place, Abraham believed that he was the maker of heaven and earth, the only God; and in the next place, that he would make his seed as the stars of heaven. In righteousness, therefore, having left his earthly kindred, he followed the Word of God, walking as a pilgrim with the Word, that he might afterwards dwell with the Word.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
