4 for these have all put in money they could spare, but she in her poverty has put in all she had to live on.'

Of These.

When a broken branch bears a blossom anyway, or a fading stream still slakes someone’s thirst, it is like two small coins that somehow hold up the temple walls. The broken branch, the fading stream, the two small coins are not meager. They hold the temple together. Like brick and mortar, they build and sustain the holy work of seemingly ordinary people and in seemingly ordinary places.

The grand gestures of the grandiose grab our attention, but the kingdom is not built of full-throated yet halfhearted gestures. It is formed by the wholehearted response of love, no matter how modest in the eyes of the grandiose. The kingdom of Christ the King is not built of counterfeit gifts but of genuine love that offers gifts from the heart—gifts that satisfy the thirsty of body and soul, that bring beauty and flourishing where it is sorely needed, and that hold firm the temple of God. For “the temple of God, which we are, is holy” (1 Cor 3:17).

Jesus took note of the widow’s gift in the temple that day. He saw. May we, too, notice the generosity of others, knowing that their gift from a full heart may empty their pocket. And it is our gift, even from a fading stream, that may slake their thirst. When we feel like an anemic stream or a broken branch, or when we wonder if even the last two coins in our pocket are counterfeit, we can take solace in the knowledge that of these the kingdom is built . . . when we give all we have in love.
