35 Jesus made a tour through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing all kinds of disease and all kinds of illness.

36 And when he saw the crowds he felt sorry for them because they were harassed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd.

37 Then he said to his disciples, 'The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers to his harvest.'

1 He summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to drive them out and to cure all kinds of disease and all kinds of illness.

5 These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them as follows: 'Do not make your way to gentile territory, and do not enter any Samaritan town;

6 go instead to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.

7 And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of Heaven is close at hand.

8 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those suffering from virulent skin-diseases, drive out devils. You received without charge, give without charge.

To lead a life ... based on fidelity to the teaching of Jesus we need to pause before making important decisions. We need to activate our conscience.

This Is the Way.

What does the Gospel text mean when it says that Jesus went around proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom? It surely means more than a propaganda blitz, advertising a new product. Jesus is not pointing to a novelty but is asking the crowds to find the saving of action of God in their own world, because the Kingdom of God is not far off nor is it difficult to find. “The Kingdom of heaven is very near.” In fact, as Jesus says elsewhere, “the Kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21).

We who live in the world of multiple and contradictory moral options need to ensure that our choices are not based on mere opinion but are grounded in the truth of God’s self-revelation. How do we make contact with revelation? It comes to us through Scripture, through the consensus of God’s faithful people, and through a well-formed conscience.

To lead a life that is based on fidelity to the teaching of Jesus we need to pause before making important decisions. We need to activate our conscience. This is more than a matter of narcissistic opinion. A genuine conscience is in harmony with the deep tradition of the Church, a tradition which recognizes that harmony is different from unison. A conscience that is formed by years of reflection and practical fidelity is a good guide. As the prophet Isaiah says, “While from behind, a voice shall sound in your ears: ‘This is the way; walk in it.’ ”

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.
