11 'In truth I tell you, of all the children born to women, there has never been anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of Heaven is greater than he.

12 Since John the Baptist came, up to this present time, the kingdom of Heaven has been subjected to violence and the violent are taking it by storm.

13 Because it was towards John that all the prophecies of the prophets and of the Law were leading;

14 and he, if you will believe me, is the Elijah who was to return.

15 Anyone who has ears should listen!

There is no question that Mary wants us to know her divine Son. But she also charges us to help our brothers and sisters know Jesus.

Charged with a Mission.

Like so many mothers, Mary leads by example. She says yes to the angel Gabriel and yes to God. And immediately after the Annunciation, she goes to care for her pregnant cousin, Elizabeth. She goes out to meet those in need.

She was at the cross for Jesus, she was there with the apostles at Pentecost, and she is here for us. Mary speaks in a way we can understand, as she did to St. Juan Diego. Yet along with the consolation she provides, Mary also charges us with a mission.

When Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego in 1531, she asked that a church be built. In that church, Mary said, she would give all her love, compassion, and protection to the people. “Am I not here, I, who am your mother?” Our Lady asked Juan Diego in Nahuatl, his native tongue. Her words are written on the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. And, much like the image the roses left on Juan Diego’s cloak, these words are a continual witness of the mission Mary gives us today. She shows us how to meet our brothers and sisters where they are.

There is no question that Mary wants us to know her divine Son. But she also charges us to help our brothers and sisters know Jesus. Mary nurtures us and intercedes for us when we need spiritual and physical healing. But coming to know Mary comes with obligations. She claims us for God and asks us to do as she does. We, too, must bring Jesus to the world.

Closing Prayer

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
