11 He replied, 'Elijah is indeed coming, and he will set everything right again;

12 however, I tell you that Elijah has come already and they did not recognise him but treated him as they pleased; and the Son of man will suffer similarly at their hands.'

13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking of John the Baptist.

The Whole Story.

He was about three years old, and he was beyond indignant. As the assembly began their recitation of the Creed, my great-nephew heard the words “Jesus suffered, died, and was buried,” and he cried out at the top of his lungs, “Jesus died???” And then another bellow at his mom, this time incredulous: “You didn’t tell me Jesus died!!!”

Just weeks before, he had heard the Christmas story from his parents. Jesus was real and alive for him. Jesus had become his friend. He chose a family from the giving tree and took them presents in Jesus’ name. And then he heard that Jesus died—and realized no one had told him the whole story.

We’ve heard the whole story, of course, but it’s possible during Advent to focus narrowly on just the infancy narratives. It is easy to lose ourselves in the beautiful readings and the lyrics of our Advent hymns, to get immersed in the tender images of a baby’s birth and the visits of angels, shepherds, and wise persons from afar. But that’s only a piece of the story.

Today’s liturgy hints at the rest. There is mention of the cross of Christ, the suffering of the Son of Man, the mysteries of the Lord’s passion, the need as disciples for self-denial and taking up the cross. These are challenging words in any circumstance, but especially in the middle of Advent. Today we have reminders of the whole mystery—the life, death, and rising of Jesus the Christ, all of it a sobering reminder that even as we celebrate the birth of the Messiah, his journey to the cross has begun.

All Loving God

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.
