2 Abraham fathered Isaac, Isaac fathered Jacob, Jacob fathered Judah and his brothers,

3 Judah fathered Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez fathered Hezron, Hezron fathered Ram,

4 Ram fathered Amminadab, Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon,

5 Salmon fathered Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz fathered Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed fathered Jesse;

6 and Jesse fathered King David. David fathered Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife,

14 Azor fathered Zadok, Zadok fathered Achim, Achim fathered Eliud,

15 Eliud fathered Eleazar, Eleazar fathered Matthan, Matthan fathered Jacob;

16 and Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary; of her was born Jesus who is called Christ.

17 The sum of generations is therefore: fourteen from Abraham to David; fourteen from David to the Babylonian deportation; and fourteen from the Babylonian deportation to Christ.

Thus Advent demands that we look to the future; we are people of expectation and hope.

Swept Up by Love.

Our Advent is an Advent “after the birth, death, and resurrection of Christ.” And this “after” gives our Advent a character not there for people before Christ. Our Advent has to it an inexorable seriousness, because in it there has to occur the acceptance of God’s gift, which is God himself, and God’s offer already has been revealed in this world. Our Advent has a blessed joy about it because it has already been assured that humankind as a whole has been swept up by the powerful love of God despite its gruesome history; and now it is only a matter of each individual’s not rejecting the event which is already given, the victory of God’s love for the world.

And yet because the revelation of this love’s victory still has to be revealed even after Christ; because the brief moment of the transfiguration of the dark world into God’s eternal light still goes on and seems to be unendingly long to us, in spite of its inexorable seriousness and its integrally blessed joy, it still seems as if we remain caught in the provisional character of the world.

Thus Advent demands that we look to the future; we are people of expectation and hope. Too quickly and too easily do we get immersed in what we call the present, although it is basically only the transition from a past which derails us, and to a future we do not yet possess. . . .

Advent summons us to look to the future and to plan something for the day after tomorrow, trusting in the conviction that if our plan for the near future should collapse, we have still survived the near future with courage against shortsighted resignation and we have demonstrated that we have faith in the eternal future of God.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
