When the Spirit Fills Us.

We may easily recall that Scripture says Jesus was “filled with the Holy Spirit.” But we might miss that Scripture says the same about Elizabeth, Zechariah, Peter, Paul, the Christian community as a whole—and, of course, Stephen, one of the original deacons and the first martyr for the faith.

When we imagine a person filled with God’s Spirit we think of a holy person, someone prayerful, devout, or really active in the practice of the faith. But there is another important detail about the Spirit-filled holy men and women in Scripture: they are witnesses to the fullness of God, and they share God’s Word. The Spirit is with them as they speak the Good News of God joyfully, boldly, courageously, and even unto death.

God’s Spirit is closely bound to God’s Word. Jesus tells us in today’s Gospel that “it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of the Father speaking through you.” Whenever we speak authentically about the faith, it is the Spirit who is stirring us, moving us, filling us with joy, conviction, and the words we need to proclaim the Good News. Our words become Spirit-words. The gifts of God we recognize in our lives become gifts we share with others as well. To be filled with the Spirit means we become part of the love and gift that the Spirit bestows on creation, and we ourselves become bearers of these gifts in turn. When the Spirit fills us, it overflows in word, deed, and witness of life.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
