2 and came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. 'They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,' she said, 'and we don't know where they have put him.'

3 So Peter set out with the other disciple to go to the tomb.

4 They ran together, but the other disciple, running faster than Peter, reached the tomb first;

5 he bent down and saw the linen cloths lying on the ground, but did not go in.

6 Simon Peter, following him, also came up, went into the tomb, saw the linen cloths lying on the ground

7 and also the cloth that had been over his head; this was not with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself.

8 Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and he believed.

Traces of Christmas.

John “[saw] and testified”; Peter “saw and believed”; Thomas did not see, but finally came to believe the Risen Jesus. These and other contemporaries of Jesus actually knew the itinerant preacher and wonder-worker, recently crucified but now very much alive. But subsequent generations would come to profess their belief, not in the living Jesus but in the articles of the Creed: in propositions rather than in the person. How can we ensure that the subject of our own faith is “not merely . . . dogmatic truths and norms of morality”? That it has been shaped through “an apprenticeship of suitable duration during which the disciples will be joined to Christ their Teacher” (Vatican II, describing the catechumenate period within the RCIA, Ad Gentes 14).

Look closer at today’s readings: John’s letter speaks of intimate contact—in the flesh—with Jesus. But those who “have heard . . . seen . . . looked upon . . . and touched” him must now go and “testify and proclaim” so that others “may have fellowship with us.” This was the mission of those who had known Jesus. But there is more, for as Jesus would tell Thomas and as later generations would take to heart, “blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe” (John 20:29).

We have not seen Jesus in the flesh, but we have just celebrated his birth. What trace does that leave in us? Have we become any more intimate with Jesus? What do we have to proclaim? John, Peter, and Thomas would never forget the lesson of Easter. Will we too soon forget the lesson of Christmas?
