36 There was a prophetess, too, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was well on in years. Her days of girlhood over, she had been married for seven years

37 before becoming a widow. She was now eighty-four years old and never left the Temple, serving God night and day with fasting and prayer.

38 She came up just at that moment and began to praise God; and she spoke of the child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem.

39 When they had done everything the Law of the Lord required, they went back to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.

Christmas Every Day.

It is challenging on this sixth day of Christmas to hear the First Letter of John exhorting us not to “love the world or the things of the world.” As we know, “the world” tends to treat Christmas as over and done. Christmas began long before Thanksgiving, when stores were stocked with candy and decorations. The prevailing attitude of American culture is one that finds discomfort in the present, electing instead to focus on the next, best, newest, more interesting thing, whether that be a holiday or something else. Johannine wisdom would have us reevaluate our attitudes about quickly moving on to the next thing and instead embrace the celebration of the Incarnation that continues until the Baptism of the Lord.

The prophetess Anna models this alternative way of being, helping us shift our focus from what lies ahead to what is right in front of us. Luke’s Gospel recounts that Anna has never left the Temple, never stepped away from the absolute now of God’s presence before her, worshiping God “night and day with fasting and prayer.”

What if we took a cue from Anna today?

Almost a week into celebrating the birth of Christ, our opening prayer describes the Nativity of the Lord with “newness.” But do our prayers, our reflections, our lives and actions reflect the eternal newness of the gift of God’s own self to us that we celebrate this week? Rather than moving on to New Year’s or something else, let’s learn to celebrate Christmas in each moment and every day.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
